If you love Family History as much as we do, you’ll want to build a family history book. Not sure where to start? See below.

How to Make a Family History Book

Though MyCanvas is owned by Alexander’s, we continue to partner with Ancestry to make uploading your family history information smooth and easy. (At Ancestry.com, find us under the extras tab.) You can either make your book with Ancestry, or create your own from scratch!

When you visit MyCanvas.com, you can find family history books in the top bar under family history. From here, you can choose from a variety of book types:

  • Standard Book: templates include family group sheets, timelines, record pages. 4 or 5 generations.
  • Combination Book: templates include family group sheets, timelines, record pages. 4 generations. Currently only available to Ancestry users.
  • Descendant Tree Book: templates include title page, photo layout pages, table of contents, family section pages, timelines, record pages, family group sheets. 3 or 4 generations. Currently only available to Ancestry users.
  • Descendant List Book: templates include: title page, photo layout pages, table of contents, family section pages, timelines, record pages, family group sheets. 3 generations. Currently only available to Ancestry users.

Once you’ve selected the type of book, you can then select the size. Two are available:

  • Regular: 11 X 8.5″ – max page count 250
  • Large: 14 X 11″ – max page count 120

Sometimes, Ancestry’s download automatically exceeds the maximum page amount. MyCanvas will not allow you to purchase books that exceed the maximum page count. If this happens, delete unnecessary pages, or split the book in half, so that the page count is below the maximum.

Once you’ve made your selections and Ancestry has downloaded your book, you can add additional information using MyCanvas’ features. Add personal pictures, text commentary, embellishments, and more!
